Position: Head Electrician
Department: Production
Reports To: Production Manager
Status: Full-time, non-exempt
Hours and Wage: The position is paid on an hourly basis in accordance with the wage provisions and conditions contained as part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between I.A.T.S.E. Local No. 13, St. Paul, Minnesota and the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. Must have availability to work long hours, weekends, evenings and holidays.


POSITION SUMMARY

The position of Head Electrician is a full-time, non-exempt, position which requires the crew member to directly interact with clients and Extra Crew members and requires a positive and supportive attitude as well as a strong work ethic both when working with the clients and Extra Crew members. This position will be assigned based on work needed and activity in the building. The department responsibility will be assigned by the Production Manager. The Head Electrician and the Head Sound both provide work direction to the Sound/Electric Assistant in the accomplishment of responsibilities pertaining to the department.

The work responsibilities, conditions of employment, and wage conditions of both the Head Electrician and the Sound/Electric Assistant are governed by a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Local No. 13, St. Paul, Minnesota and Ordway Center for the Performing Arts.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Possess a working knowledge and be responsible for the proper maintenance, repair, handling operation, and supervision of both theatrical and architectural lighting systems as Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. This includes control consoles and associated software; auxiliary control system electronics hardware and software; dimmer rack electronics and associated hardware; electrical distribution system circuitry; high voltage distribution feeder systems; low voltage control signal distribution systems; electrical raceways, wiring, panels, and hardware; portable multi-conductor cabling and wiring devices; lighting instrumentation, fixtures, and associated hardware; and other system elements.
2. Possess a working knowledge and be responsible for the proper maintenance, repair, handling, operation, and supervision of production electrical equipment and electromechanical devices at Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. This includes orchestra enclosure power distribution, movement, and lighting circuitry; orchestra pit lift power and safety circuitry; worklight power and control circuitry; power tools; and other related equipment and devices.

3. Possess a working knowledge of touring and portable theatrical lighting systems. This includes the specifications and operations of control consoles and auxiliary panels; system interface electronics; dimmer racks; power distribution panels; multi-conductor cabling and circuitry; theatrical lighting instrumentation and hardware; and other systems elements.
4. Assist other production department personnel when engaged non-jurisdictionally in the set-up, operations, technical production, and strike of concerts, recitals, and events.
5. Analyze department operations and recommend appropriate department inventory of spare parts, hardware, materials, tools, and additional equipment. Provide up-to-date department inventory information, and submit purchase requisitions for replacement of such inventory.
6. Provide technical support for Arts Partners, clients and users of Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, as well as artists engaged by Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, in the production and presentation of events as it pertains to the electric department. Such support would include the interpretation and coordination of lighting design plots and concepts; the hanging, hook-up, and focusing of theatrical lighting; the supervision and coordination of electrical and production lighting shop work; and other necessary and/or appropriate areas of support in a positive and helpful manner.
7. Analyze department related systems and equipment for operations effectiveness, efficiency, and safety; develop and implement operations and/or engineering improvements to increase such effectiveness, efficiency, and safety.
8. Analyze department work schedules and responsibilities in order to provide recommendations to Production Manager for the personnel required, both in number and skills, to meet department schedules and responsibilities.
9. Work with other production personnel within the department in a positive and helpful manner. Provide training of personnel in department related systems, equipment, and operations.
10. Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required and/or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Must hold high school diploma or equivalent. Degree preferred: B.A. or B.F.A. or equivalent experience.

Experience: Knowledge/Skills/Ability/Experience:
• A minimum of five years working experience as a professional theatrical electrician is preferred.
• Membership in the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E.) is highly desirable. Must be able and willing to become and remain a member of Union Local 13 or tender periodic dues and initiation fees to the union.
• Must have working experience with and be able to operate all equipment listed above.
• Must have working familiarity with all other standard theatrical equipment.
• Must possess a working knowledge, a professional skill level, and trade craftsmanship associated with the ability to perform the above duties and responsibilities.

• Must possess a knowledge of national, state, and city electrical codes as it pertains to the facilities, equipment, and practices.
• Must be familiar and keep up to date with professional production techniques, equipment, and practices.
• Must have experience with large staffs and complex schedules.
• Ability to provide direction for department personnel, and to analyze department schedules and responsibilities in order to best utilize such personnel.
• Ability to work with other production personnel within the department, provide information and training to related systems and equipment to temporary personnel.
• Ability to work cooperatively with a variety of clients, and serve as liaison with departments to coordinate and plan efficient work schedules.
• Must have ability to work long hours, weekends, evenings and holidays.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs

Equipment Operated: Will operate all equipment listed above. Must be able to operate all standard theatrical equipment.
