Services Offered: The Loft is the nations largest, most comprehensive literary center. The mission of the Loft is to foster a writing community, the artistic development of individual writers, and an audience for literature. The Loft offers creative writing courses, grants, mentorship programs and public events.

FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS:

*The Loft Literary Center administers the McKnight Artist Fellowships for Writers, which provide Minnesota writers of demonstrated ability with an opportunity to work on their writing for a concentrated period of time. In 2007, four $25,000 fellowships will be awarded to writers of creative prose. Creative prose includes fiction and literary nonfiction such as memoir, personal essay and autobiography. These fellowships do not support the work of playwriting, journalism or nonfiction that is written primarily for educational or technical use. In 2008, the fellowships will be offered to poets. A $25,000 fellowship is awarded each year in children’s literature, including poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction. This year’s award is offered to a writer for children 8 years of age and older. Next year, it will be awarded to a writer for younger children. The fellowship does not include educational material for children. Winners will be paid in equal monthly installments. All fellowship winners will be honored at receptions with the judges and will present their work in a public event to be arranged with Loft staff.

*The Minnesota Writers Career Initiative provides financial support and professional assistance to advanced writers to develop and implement multifaceted plans to help them enter the next phase of their careers. Two to four winners will be selected to receive grants of no more than $8,000 to underwrite career development plans of their own design. Proposals should include the applicant's vision of his or her career path and how it would benefit from the proposed plan. It must also be compatible with the realities of the literary market.

*The Loft Literary Center invites poets, fiction and creative nonfiction writers to apply to the 2005-2006 Mentor Series in Poetry and Creative Prose. This program offers advanced criticism and professional development opportunities to twelve writers: four each in the genres of poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction.Twelve emerging writers will be selected through anonymous competition to work intensively with six nationally acclaimed writers of prose and poetry. Three of the mentors will spend a month working with the entire group. In addition, winners in each genre meet with their respective mentors as well as have individual conferences. The other three mentors will come in for intensive weekends of craft seminars with the full group and individual manuscript conferences with the writers in their genre.
